Abstract

Adolescence is a “transition and stressful period due to physical, psychological, sexual changes and the presence of psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and stress at this stage of life is a cause for concern. Depression is a common mental disorder characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to perform daily activities. To learn about the mental health status of teenagers attending school in Delhi. The objectives were to study the prevalence of DAS among adolescents who attend school and to study the correlates of DAS. The impact of DAS has been high among adolescents attending school in Delhi. The level of anxiety was found higher in the participants who belong to common families. Students who stayed away from home in shelters and paid for guest accommodation had higher levels of depression and stress. The prevalence of depression and stress was found to be higher in students who were bullied by their peers. The prevalence of DAS was also found to be higher in students who felt overworked with test programs. The level of stress was higher among the participants who were not satisfied with their academic performance and whose parents were not satisfied. Adolescents who drank alcohol and smoked showed a higher prevalence of DAS. Early and effective identification of DAS is needed that can prevent many early stage psychiatric disorders.”
